Lord Seb Coe visits Cambridge

London 2012 Chairman Lord Seb Coe was in Cambridge last Thursday (13th May) to visit sports activities for young people in Cambridge.

The two-time former 800m Olympic Gold Medallist visited a Team East for Skills Volunteering to Employment session at Wesley Methodist Church in Cambridge run by Momentum Arts, in conjunction with LIVING SPORT.

Team East for Skills is made up of a regional consortium of arts, sports and voluntary organisations and is a scheme which aims to use the inspiration of London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to help unemployed people to improve their skills, engage in volunteering activity and in some cases gain employment, while promoting the Olympic/Paralympic ideals.

Lord Coe was involved in two activities during his visit to the session, an organisational activity called Suits You, run by qualified Sports Leaders tutor Ryan Cullum of LIVING SPORT, and Chairs, run by Lead Artist Tessa McGinn, in addition to providing an inspirational talk to the young people involved in the day.

After the Team East for Skills session, the former Politician headed across Cambridge to Long Road Sixth Form College to an event entitled ‘Wheeling towards London’, designed to raise the awareness of Paralympic Sport as part of the London 2012 ‘Get Set’ Education Programme.

The Long Road event included a talk on volunteering by LIVING SPORT’s Claire Thorby and three time GB Paralympian Graham Bool spoke about the development of wheelchair basketball in the UK.

Gordon Perry, the winner of the first London Wheelchair Marathon in 1983 and three National Championships with LGS Jets, then led wheelchair basketball sessions involving pupils from Long Road and secondary schools in Cambridge, and Lord Coe.
