Five time Paralympic gold medallist Jody Cundy was given the Freedom of Wisbech at a special ceremony organised by the town council on Friday 21st May.
Cundy received the honour in recognition of his remarkable personal journey from a disabled young boy to athletic superstar.
After a glittering Freedom Presentation, he embarked on a tour of schools, community groups and youth sports clubs in the area to tell his inspirational story.
In the evening, a special event was held at the Boathouse in the town from 7.30pm. The event was called ‘An Audience With Jody’ and was jointly hosted by the Wisbech Standard and Fenland District Council.
It was a chance to chat with Jody and hear of his determination to succeed and of the tough training programmes he endures to compete at the highest level.
The following day, Saturday 22nd May, the sporting hero toured the town in an open top bus, appeared at various shopping areas and was in market square after 11am.
The ex-Marshland High School pupil, whose deformed right foot was amputated at the age of three, is the first person to be given free reign of the town since James Crowden, the former Olympic rower, ex-High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and ex-Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire.
