Proteus Canoe Club are looking to progress and develop by acquiring new equipment to assist club members in their quest for national ranking success.
The club was formed over 40 years ago, and have been based at Orton Mere in Peterborough ever since. They started to run national ranking slaloms on the site in the early 70’s, and have been doing so regularly ever since.
Proteus faced a major disaster in 2006, when their club house was the victim of an arson attack. All of the clubs equipment was lost to the fire, plus many years of memories. But thanks to the local community and from canoe clubs from all over Britain, they were back up and running by the spring slalom.
After a lot of fund raising, and considerable work, the new clubhouse was handed over to the club in November 2008. Fitted out with changing facilities and boat racking, it is now in regular use, while the donated equipment is still being used today.
The club’s ambition now is that the equipment can be securely stored, while they start to look at replacing this with more up to date designs for members to progress through the national ranking system.
Predominantly concentrating on the slalom discipline of paddlesport, the club meets on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, Sundays, and runs training trips to Holme Pierrepont, Tryweryn, and Matlock throughout the year.
The club is running its next national ranking slalom over the 19th/20th June weekend, and spectators are more than welcome to come along and watch the event.
