Sayers, Aston and Grabarz set for UK Champs

European Championship places will be up for grabs in Birmingham this weekend at the Aviva European Trials and UK Championships with local stars Goldie Sayers, Ed Aston and Robbie Grabarz looking to book seats on the plane set for Barcelona.

Sayers' spot looks assured as she tops the British javelin rankings with a best effort of 61.15m - over the A standard - which is almost 10m ahead of her nearest rival. The Cambridge thrower needs to secure a top two spot, but victory would see a unique eighth consecutive UK title.

Cambridge & Coleridge's Ed Aston will be hoping to be in with a shout in the 800m. He is currently ranked 11th in the UK standings but only one runner has achieved the A or B standard this year, so the battle could be on for qualification.

The biggest battle could, however, be on in the high jump with Robbie Grabarz as one of the top contenders as he is second in the outdoor rankings. The St Neots-based star is 5cm short of the A standard mark while his main competitors are all still a lot short of qualifying.
