Triathlete Roach supports Sport Unlimited

Local international triathlon athlete Charlotte Roach showed her support to grassroots sport by attending a Sport Unlimited supported athletics session at Sawston Village College.

Charlotte was the sporting champion for the afternoon and assisted the two coaches from Cambridge & Coleridge Athletics Club.

40 young people aged between 8 and 11 have been learning the various events within athletics over the past eight weeks. The 8 sessions which were supported by Sport Unlimited funding has given the young people the opportunity to try the sport and unearth hidden talent. A high proportion of the participants now want to continue with the sport at the local club.

Charlotte said, ‘It’s great to see so many young people so enthusiastic about participating in sport. These sessions have given all of the participants a great opportunity to try a new sport. Hopefully they all continue and reach their sporting potential.

’Charlotte certainly had a positive impact on the session with the participants inspired by her success in sport as an elite athlete. James Brennand, coach of the session and Cambridge & Coleridge Athletics Club coach added, ‘It’s great to see Charlotte at this session and inspiring the children. It has certainly made them work even harder as they look to impress our guest for the afternoon.’

Cambridge & Coleridge Athletics club were able to deliver the 8 week long project during the summer term thanks to support from LIVING SPORT and the Sport Unlimited project.

Sport Unlimited provides funding to support projects which are looking to engage with young people aged between 5 & 19 over an 8 week period. The athletics club were able to secure funding to cover the coaching fee for the project and they also act as the main exit route for the young people to continue in the sport once the project has finished.

Ross Hayward, Sport Unlimited Project Coordinator said, ‘I’m really pleased that Charlotte was able to come down to the project and see the excellent work which is taking place in the community to provide sporting opportunities for young people.

‘I must thank the Wells Sport Foundation for allowing us to have Charlotte attend the session. It has been a great success and hopefully we will be able to obtain Charlotte to help support future events.’

The Wells Sport Foundation is a unique sporting charity created and entirely funded by successful entrepreneur, Barrie Wells, to provide financial and motivational support to sustainable grassroots sports projects. Barrie also supports 13 young athletes who act as the foundations ambassadors and they are funded personally by Barrie to help them take a step closer to winning medals in 2012 and beyond.
