Bethany Astell and Philippa Neill are on top of the world after being selected for the Great Britain team for the World Rowing Junior Championships in August.
The duo, from St Neots Rowing Club, were chosen after coming through a lengthy trials process which began in October 2009 and involved a series of fitness and endurance tests, a selection regatta and four days of intense trials at the national squad’s training centre in Caversham.
The process was even more of an ordeal for Astell as a shoulder injury kept her out of a boat and restricted her to cross training until April this year.
Astell, 18, and 17 year old Neill both performed exceptionally during the final trials, finishing second in a coxless pairs race, before continuing to impress in the coxless fours and were named in the women’s junior eight for the World Championships.
The girls have previously raced with some of their teammates at the Munich Junior International Regatta and at the Henley Women’s Regatta where they have tasted success.
Coach Martyn Rooney was delighted to see the club’s pair selected for GB, extending St Neots record to providing members of the World Championships team for the sixth time in seven years.
