Oldham aiming for the top at Youth Olympics

Sam Oldham will be aiming for medal success after being named as one of the 40 young athletes from 16 Olympic sports in the Great Britain squad for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in August.

The Huntingdon Olympic Gymnastics Club member will be hoping to use the inspiration of clubmate Louis Smith’s success at winning the first individual gymnastics medal for GB in 100 years at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, as well as Daniel Keatings silver medal win at the World Gymnastics Championships last year.

The 17-year-old gymnast won three gold medals at the European Junior Gymnastics Championships in the team event, all-around competition and the horizontal bar in Birmingham in April and will be out to convert European success into global dominance.

Oldham attended the Beijing Olympic Games as part of the BOA’s Britain’s Olympic Ambition Programme and experience what it might be like to be an Olympian. The Youth Olympic Games take place from 14th to 26th August.
