Several athletes from Cambridgeshire competed at the Aviva English Schools’ Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, with Sam Watts, Ben Kelk, Danni Belbin, Jake Berney, Harry Wells and Simi Pam all earning top three finishes.
Cambridge Regional College student Sam Watts was the pick of the local stars after claiming gold in the Senior Boys 200m to earn a place in the GB team heading to the World Junior Championships in Canada.
Watts qualified by winning his heat in 22.03sec, and then knocked 0.25sec off his personal best to win gold in 21.10sec, and will now compete for his country as part of the100m relay squad.
Long Road’s Kelk was in action in the Senior Boys 110m hurdles and qualified for the final by running 14.40sec in the first heat, before a bronze medal finish in the final, while Belbin from Kimbolton School took part in the Intermediate Girls 300m hurdles, where she set two personal best on the way to third.
Cambridgeshire’s medal hauls were completed by a trio of Peterborough athletes, with Berney taking the silver medal in the Junior Boys 400m (51.08), Wells claiming the Intermediate Boys hammer (59.29m) and Pam clinching silver in the Intermediate Girls shot putt (12.33m).
