Golf’s version of ‘out with the old and in with the new’ was on show at Ramsey as Sarah Smith and Miranda Brain clinched victory in the Cambs & Hunts Ladies’ County Golf Association Foursomes Championship.St Ives’ Julie Walter and the Links’ Sarah Greenall were out to win their seventh consecutive foursomes’ title, but the challenge from the young guns proved too strong.
The Links’ Smith and Gog Magog’s Brain, who are both county junior players, produced two good rounds of golf to beat their much more experienced opponents by seven shots, and win their first county title. The youngsters started off positively and took a four-shot lead in the morning with a gross round of 77, while Greenall and Walter fired 81.
In the afternoon, the defending champions fought back and posted their own score of 77, but Smith and Brain responded brilliantly to hit gross 74, finishing on 151.
Walter and Greenall were second with 158, while Ramsey’s Sharren Kjenstad and Ely City’s Tina Broadley were third with 161.
Bourn’s Mae Kember and Judy Morris won the handicap section with nett 142, two ahead of Abbotsley’s Jo Fletcher and Alison Jarrett.
