A Kellogg’s Champion is a volunteer who links to a local community group such as Help the Aged, Age Concern, Youth Groups, other sporting clubs. This can be anyone who has a genuine passion in working with other people and can use swimming and aquatic exercise as the motivator to getting more active. Their role is quite simple, they talk to their local community group, they find out what sort of aquatic exercise appeals to them and then they help sign post them to the right activity at the right place at the right time! There is practical support to help change the behaviour and lifestyle to get people more physically active.
The ASA has committed to getting 270,000 people swimming once a week by 2012. In order to achieve this challenge a new approach to encouraging people to participate in Aquatic activity is the key to this success. By working in partnership with Kellogg’s the ASA is able to get into the heart of local communities to see what steps can be put into place to get people to the pool.
The ASA Everyday Swim project was aimed at getting more people swimming and to find out 'what works' in getting more people into our pools to provide a blueprint for driving up participation. Everyday Swim was made up of eight regional projects which formed a national network. Each individual pilot project had a different focus with some taking a community-wide approach and others focusing on specific target groups including people aged 50+, young people at risk from obesity, people with disabilities and rural access issues. Despite differing target groups all pilot projects worked towards the same overarching objective to increase participation by 2 percentage points per Annum (within their specific target group).
