The ‘Big Three’ (Lily Seach, Jordan Gillbanks, Jonathan Edwards) from Huntingdonshire AC took on the very best of the Eastern Counties and all came away with gold medal-winning performances, while other club members took part in the Daily Crest St Ives 10k Road Race and Fun Run.
In a Regional Championship meet which incorporates Cambridgeshire and the six other counties which border it, Lily Seach’s victory in the Under 17 Women’s 300m was quite remarkable in the extremely windy conditions as she left the opposition behind by a huge five seconds.
In the Under 17 Men’s 400m, Jordan Gillbanks continued his superb run of form, winning comfortably by eight metres, while in the Under 20 Men’s throws, Jonathan Edwards was in supreme form as he won the hammer throw competition by over nine metres and broke his won club record by over two metres.
Edwards’ winning distance of 54.40m ranks him as the 14th best junior in the country, while he also added an easy gold medal to his collection, winning the discus by 21 metres. In the Senior Men’s section, Christian Roberts won the 400m hurdles race to add to the junior title he won last year.
At the Dairy Crest St Ives 10k road race, declared ‘a rousing success’ by Huntingdonshire AC’s Race Director Gill Luff, Craig Holgate of Ely Runners headed the men’s field in a time of 33:34 while Elaine O’Sullivan took top honours in the women’s race in 42:03.
Christina Marshall, 16, finished a whopping eight minutes ahead of her nearest rival in the W15-19 category in club U17W record time, with Neil Speaight leading the club’s men’s team home in 12th place, and Julia McIntosh claiming an excellent 7th place finish overall and 3rd in W45-49 category.
In the 3k fun run, 14 year old James Downing ran out a very easy winner, finishing 65 seconds ahead of the next runner, while Eleanor Smith finished in second place in the girls’ section.
In the team competition, Cambridge & Coleridge ran out winners in the men’s team event with March AC picking up first place in the women’s team category, and Hunts AC a close second in the latter.
This well-organised annual event embraces the RAF Wyton airfield, and saw 424 runners cross the finishing line with a further 109 starters in the fun run.
