Lakeside Sailing Club’s 13th annual 24 hour race took place in June and proved to be a very successful event, with 15 teams from 6 clubs and a school taking part in the event.
The weekend started with cold and cloudy conditions but it did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of those taking part, although unfortunately the fly past by the BBMF was cancelled late on Friday owing to a forecast of strong winds for Saturday.
The Mayor of Peterborough Cllr Keith Sharpe and his Mayoress Doris Merchant started the race on time and spent a long time chatting, before the Mayor returned to finish the race on Sunday and to present the trophy to winning team captain Andy Belson from Lakeside sailing Barries red comet.
A particular mention must go to Kings School, who were a credit to their school and their helpers after sailing on into the night with most of them not very experienced in racing, and Sailability, competing with two boats with one led mainly by disabled people with a “buddy” on board.
Other mentions must go to Café Pirates for looking great in their pirate gear, Welland Sailing Club who were a formidable team with Andy Priors’ team Laser Radial only just failing to lift the trophy, as well as the strong Lakeside Comet 1 and 2 teams.
Gentleman Jim Wayfarer’s team sailed impressively to third, while the Laser 13 sailed by the Cracknell family proved to be a strong unit and also the three lads from Felixstowe in their Laser who completed 76 laps.
Organisers would also like to thank Richard Hammond, Chairman of the RNLI Peterborough branch, for being on rescue for several hours including the dog watch shifts, his wife Clare for doing hours of lap counting and assistance in the Mayor’s party, and Barry Elsom and Lakeside Leisure for help in the organisation of the amazing day.
