Ed Aston and Robbia Grabarz could both be hanging by the phone for a call from the Commonwealth Games selectors, after strong performances at recent major championships.
But with no guarantee that either will gain selection, the next month – and events in Belfast, Amsterdam and Gothenburg – could prove crucial.
Aston is third in the UK Rankings for the 800m while Grabarz is ranked as one of the top four high jumpers in the country.
The 21 year old 800m runner finished second at the England Senior Closed Championships at Gateshead, following his fourth-place finish at the Aviva European Trials and UK Championships.
St Neots’ Grabaraz won the England Senior Closed Championships at Gateshead – with a clearance of 2.23m – and his gold medal adds to the bronze he won at the Aviva European Trials and UK Championships, putting him in firm contention to get the third spot on the plane to Delhi.
Aston’s rivals for spots in the team are Darren St Clair, winner at the Closed Champs, and UK No. 1Michael Rimmer. Tom Parsons and Martyn Bernard are expected to get two of the places ahead of Grabarz in the high jump after qualifying, leaving a battle with Samson Oni for the third place.
