Neill and Astell on top of the world

St Neots Rowing Club members Phillipa Neill and Bethany Astell are on top of the world after winning gold as part of the women’s eight at the World Junior Championships in the Czech Republic.

Neill and Astell joined Rosa Atkinson, Camilla Hadland, Yasmin Tredell, Georgia Howard-Merrill, Ruth Whyman, Fiona Gammond and cox Lily van den Broecke in the crew which won their heat to qualify for the final in Racice.

In the race, they took an early lead and reached the 500m mark in 1min 31.87sec, before proving to be unbeatable to win in 6min 24.97, with the USA second and Germany third.

The pair’s international success leads on from Peterborough City Rowing Club’s James Fox bronze medal at the European Junior Championships in Belgium last weekend.

Fox, 18, won two gold medals at the event last year but had to settle for third this time round in the Double Sculls with Middlesborough rower Andy Brown while fellow city rower Ed Rippon took fifth in the singles.
