Hunts AC Vets complete league season

The Huntingdonshire AC Veteran’s track & field team completed their regular season at Milton Keynes with some fine individual performances to finish third on the night.

In the women’s team, Sandra Pedley was in excellent form as she added 10 cms to her club record for an easy win in the W45 pole vault. Sue Cahill impressed with a first place finish in the W35 triple jump, winning the event by one metre.

On the men’s side, Peter Downhill came away from the meet with two wins under his belt, a win the M40 400m by 15 seconds before tagging behind the leader in the 800m and sprinting past in the home straight. Club newcomer Richard Holland made an immediate impact by winning the M50 3000m race.

Rob Campbell, running in the M40 race, ran faster than Holland, to reduce the club record by almost four seconds. Richard Phelan had a field day by winning the M40 triple jump with his furthest leap this year, as well as season’s bests in the pole vault and discus, and cracking 28 secs in the 200m.

At the latest East Anglian League match in Luton, four of the fastest Under 17 men from Huntingdonshire AC teamed for the first time to beat the 30 year old U17M club 4x100m relay record of 46.5 secs.

Hakeem Duckworth-Porter, Ryan Palmer, Tom Johnson, and Jordan Gillbanks joined forces to cover the sprint relay distance in 45.8 secs, even managing to beat all Senior Men’s teams who competed in the same race.

Palmer picked up the U17M 100m and 200m A string double victory earlier in the day, with the latter race being covered in his fastest ever time, while Duckworth-Porter and Gillbanks back superbly won the B string 100m and 200m, respectively. They both had further success in the high jump with Gillbanks winning the A string and Duckworth-Porter the B.

Duckworth-Porter also claimed a four-second 800m A string win with his second-fastest ever time gave him four first places on the day. Another multi-winner was 15-year-old Luke Scott who won the U17M 400m and 800m B string races, setting personal bests in both.

Out in the field, Jonathan Edwards and Paul Hayball renewed their rivalry with Edwards coming out on top on this occasion by throwing further in the discus and shot putt, achieving a club Junior Men’s record in the latter event (his 17th record of the season).

Hayball at least had the consolation of picking up two B string wins as well as a first in the A string javelin event. Katie Scholey was the top Hunts AC girl of the meet, winning the Under 15 800m A string race by four seconds and also improving her long jump personal best by 12 cms.
