Cambridgeshire’s Littleport Judo Club recently held a successful seven-week taster course for pupils across the region.
The course was funded through Sport Unlimited with support from the LIVING SPORT, the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough County Sports Partnership, and East Cambridgeshire Sports Development Officer Tom Hickson.
Pupils from Littleport Primary, Millport and Spring Meadow schools attended as 13 youngsters experienced the Olympic sport for the first time from 18 May to 29 June.
Stacey Smithson, British Judo Association’s Eastern Development Officer, has seen the club develop significant links in the region. Smithson said, ‘The course coincided with Littleport Judo Club establishing a link with Witchford School Sports Partnership who are keen to support the development of judo in their partnership.’
‘It is great to see these Sport Unlimited projects taking off and being successful. It is a great way for clubs to gain some funding to run a beginners course either at their club or at a local school or college.’
Club Secretary Rosalind Edwards said, ‘Five or six youngsters expressed an interest in the joining the club so we consider the course a success and will certainly consider running a similar event for secondary school students.’
Other judo clubs interested in applying for funding to deliver a course next year are advised to contact their BJA Regional Development Officer or the LIVING SPORT for more information.
The club train at Littleport Sport & Leisure Centre, Camel Road, Littleport, Ely, Cambridgeshire, CB6 1PU. Juniors train on a Tuesday at 7pm – 8pm while seniors train on the same day at 7pm – 9pm.
