Oldham Wins Olympic Gold

Sam Oldham claimed gymnastics gold at the Youth Olympic Games on Sunday to end an up and down week on a high in Singapore.

The Huntingdon Olympic Gymnastics Club athlete has enjoyed the most turbulent of weeks in the Lion City, suffering a heavy fall in the horizontal bar section of the all-around final last Wednesday as the silver medal slipped through his fingers.

In the all-around competition, the 17 year old was forced to settle for fifth but he got straight back on the pommel horse on Saturday to clinch silver and miss out on gold by the narrowest of margins.

His last chance for gold came, ironically enough, in the horizontal bar final and Oldham produced the goods back on the bar to claim victory with a score of 14.375 to bring the curtain down on his competition in style.

Oldham has already made sizeable waves in gymnastics circles and claimed three gold medals at April's European Junior Championships in Birmingham. The youngster is refusing to cast his mind forward to the London 2012 just yet, but aims to compete at October’s Commonwealth Games with a call-up likely.
