Local stars come out for P'boro City Games

THE Peterborough City Games take place at the Embankment Track on Monday (30 August) with several of the area’s best athletes in action.

Deeping sprint hurdler Julian Adeniran has been out with a quadricep injury for a couple of months but is entered and the twice English Schools champion will be looking to salvage something before the season ends. The former British junior international won the Midland title earlier in the summer before injury curtailed his campaign.

But the city’s three English Schools medallists will not line up - 400m star Jake Berney being on holiday, Peterborough Athletic Club team-mate Simi Pam giving the shot a miss to save herself for next month’s UK School Games and Nene Valley Harrier Harry Wells ruled out of the hammer due to injury. The 16 year-old broke Nene Valley’s senior record earlier this year but has a hip flexor injury that will also rule him out of the UK School Games. The problem is caused the fact he has an extra bone in his hip and he recently had an MRI scan at Leicester Tigers Rugby Club where he is on a scholarship.

Among the locals looking to impress on Monday are host club Peterborough Athletic Club’s 2009 English Schools long jump champion Joel Grenfell and team-mate Max Everest who took bronze at the English Schools hurdles last year.

Clubmate Emily Moss has smashed her personal bests his both 800m and 400m hurdles this year while the Under 17 women’s section sees versatile clubmate Georgia Woods and Hunts Athletic Club speedster Lily Seach competing.

Under 13 girls sprinter Ebony Ogle has been in good form recently as has Nene Valley Under 17 women’s sprinter Emily Maltby.

Nene Valley’s senior javelin club record, which had lasted for 20 years, could fall for the second time in a fortnight as new record-holder and former Lithuanian champion Ramunas Butkis has entered. Clubmate Robert Mohan made his international debut this year and will look to impress in the shot, as will the host club’s Martin Tinkler. Hunts’ Jonathan Edwards has broken his club record regularly in the hammer this year and will be looking for another good performance.

ANOTHER popular event taking place on Monday is the Ocean Spray Grimsthorpe Castle 10, which gets under way at 11am preceded by a 3k fun run at 10.30am.

Entries will be accepted on the day up to 10.15am and there are £100 cash bonuses if the course records - Men’s 32.35 and women’s 35.54 - are broken.
