National success for terrific local duo

SIMI Pam and Charlotte Taylor produced the goods to win national titles at the English Under 15/Under 17 Championships at Bedford.

Pam, of Peterborough Athletic Club, won the Under 17 shot while Nene Valley Harrier Taylor took the 3000m in the same age group.

Coached by British shot putt legend Geoff Capes, Pam has enjoyed a superb season as she also took silver at the English Schools Championships and is ranked second in the country for her age group. And with UK number one Sophie McKinna absent - due to competing at the European Youth Festival, where she finished fifth, Pam lined up as the favourite.

Taylor, who will also compete at the UK School Games, was delighted to win after missing the early part of the summer due to injury.

She tracked the leading pair, going through the opening kilometre in 3.16, and with 800m to go she kicked to win in 10.02.83, just a second outside her personal best.

Peterborough Athletic Club’s Jake Berney made a bold bid to add another medal to the silver he got at the English Schools Championships.

Berney, who won his 400m semi-final in 53.21, was in second place entering the home straight but had to settle for finishing fifth in 51.47 - the second fastest time in his life, bettered only by the 51.08 that earned him a medal at the English Schools.

Clubmate Joel Grenfell was only in excellent form, equalling his personal best of 6.66m to finish fourth in the long jump. He also ran his fastest ever legal 100m time of 11.28 in the semis where he went out along with fellow PAC sprinter Alex McNally. PAC’s sprinting prowess is such that they had a third athlete who qualified for the championships but Ashley Watson went out in the heats.

Max Everest was another PAC star in fine form, taking seventh hundredths of a second off his personal best when reaching the 100m hurdles final and going on to finish fifth.

Northborough athlete Stephanie Williams, representing Herts Phoenix, reached the final of the 300m hurdles while PAC’s Georgia Woods performed solidly for eighth in the javelin.
