Hockey Players stick it out for Charity

Over the week-end, hockey players have been pushing through the pain in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest ever hockey match by playing for a staggering 32 hours. The determined hockey players started playing at noon on Friday on the astroturf pitch in Bushfield Sport Centre, in Orton Waterville. They continued to play to the next day, finally being able to up sticks and go home after 8pm.

The Stick for Life charity game was organised to raise money for Cancer Research UK and the overall target was to raise £10,000.

The match involved two squads named after sponsors Logica, an IT firm and Mercia, who made the kits, pitting their skills against each other. Each squad has 16 players with 11 on the field for each time at one time and they were allowed five minute toilet breaks every hour. The players were recruited via contacts of old team-mates and word of mouth.

The sports centre stayed open overnight to give players the chance to use the toilet and vending machines during breaks from the action. And floodlights were switched on at 6pm last night and lit the night-time portion of the game until 7am the next day.

Fans who came down to watch the game were also able to enjoy a range of funfair rides set up next to the pitch.
