Vivacity Vision for Peterborough revamped

The boss of the newly created Peterborough culture and leisure trust Vivacity is planning to invest £450,000 in an ambitious extension of the Embankment Pavilion as a part of an improvement programme of its facilities in the city.

Vivacity is expected to spend £450,000 to refurbish the changing facilities, improve security and create a space for social events in the building.

The trust was given control by Peterborough City Council of the city’s arts facilities, including the Key Theatre, libraries and sports centres in May.

Proposals to spend £350,000 on Peterborough’s Regional Pool and £3.2 million to be spent on the regeneration of Peterborough Museum were already announced before the pavilion plan.

But while these projects will be funded by Peterborough City Council and grant bodies such as the Heritage Lottery Fund, funding to maintain the facilities is less secure. Indeed, Vivacity gets most of its income from the city council and this one is reducing each year. Last July, in order to save £800,000, 30 jobs were cut. Shelagh Smith, chairman of Vivacity admitted that there were tough times ahead.

This is why the regeneration of the city’s facilities is so important to generate extra revenue by increasing visitor numbers at sports centres, making better use of the city’s Key Theatre and museum, as well as revamping the pavilion to use for corporate events.
