Local athletes impressed at Sunday’s Grunty Fen Half-marathon at Ely with Paul Halford winning in a Werrington Joggers club record of 71.55 and Becky Cousins smashing her personal best for her fourth Cambs Road League victory of the year.
Halford, the reigning Cambs Road League champion, took a massive four minutes off his personal best to win by 49 seconds from Coventry’s Matthew Almond - winner of last year’s NVH 5k.
The Welsh veteran international also took 15 seconds off John Herbert’s club record as he easily took the gold medal at the Cambridgeshire Championships, held within the race.
Halford went through 10 miles in 55.00 compared to his PB of 57.21 for the distance, although he has been quicker in training.
Brian Corleys broke John Richmond’s Bushfield Joggers club record and now has five of the six records.
Richmond, whose wife Eli Scott (the 2009 Cambs Road League champion) missed Sunday’s race with a knee injury, still holds the marathon best.
Cousins has been in superb form on the roads this year and was delighted to win over a distance much longer than she is used to.
She is assured of her first Cambs Road League title as her five scoring races to date consist of four wins and a second - and if she wins on her home course at the Fenland 10 next month she’ll finish the campaign with a perfect five-point score.
Nene Valley Harrier Ruth Jones took five minutes off her personal best when finishing second woman.
