PACTRAC’S Georgina Jennings returned from the World Triathlon Championships in Budapest with two gold medals.
Competing in the 65-69 age group, she won the World aquathon title and followed up with another success two days later in the World Sprint Triathlon Championships. Winning the aquathon - a 1k swim followed by a 1.75-mile run - was a great effort because cycling is considered her best discipline in the triathlon. She was second coming out of the water but lost a place in transition so set off on the run in third. She followed the second-placed competitor (Australian Janice Iredale) and the pair caught the leader just before halfway with Jennings hitting the front during the second half and going on to win by 22 seconds from Iredale. Jennings completed the swim in 21.25, took 2.25 in transition and then ran 14.11 for a final time of 38.01.
Her victory in the triathlon was far more emphatic as she came home with more than 10 minutes to spare - Iredale again finishing second. Jennings was a minute ahead coming out of the water but again lost time in transition and held a 29-second advantage setting off on the bike stage. But she showed her class on two wheels to finish the stage almost four-and-a-half minutes clear with the fastest time of the stage and this time she was quickest in transition. Jennings also clocked the fastest time on the run stage, gaining more than five minutes to win with ease in 87.36. She completed the swim in 15.43, bike in 42.47 and run in 29.06.
PACTRAC clubmate Christina Cork, a bronze medallist in the sprint triathlon two years earlier, finished 14th in the 35-39 age group. She was 22nd after the swim, moved up to eighth on her favoured bike stage and eventually crossed the line four minutes behind the winner. Cork, getting back to form after taking time out to have a baby, completed the swim in 14.09, bike in 36.07 and run in 23.29 for a final time of 1.13.45.
It was also a great weekend for PACTRAC’s Simon Hoppe. Although he has four European medals to his name, he had never made the podium at a World Championships before ..Hoppe, sponsored by Tri UK, had never finished higher than 14th in a World Championship but came third out of 88 in the 40-44 age group. He completed the swim in 10.39, bike in 34.01 and run in 19.12 for a final time of 63.52.
