Fastest Ever Great Eastern Run predicted

Several athletes with a winning pedigree have entered the Perkins Great Eastern Run and organisers are hopeful the race will produce the fastest ever half-marathon seen in Peterborough.

Entries are already beyond 3,000 and are 28 per cent up on last year but now there is quality to go with the quantity.

The fastest half-marathon ever seen in the city was 62.57 by William Chebon in 2008 but several African aces are aiming to go quicker on October 10.

Edwin Kipkorir has already won one ‘Great’ race this year, the Great North 10k in July, and believes he is capable of collecting the £750 bonus for a winning time of under 62 minutes. That would be on top of the first prize of £750.

Another Edwin, Kipyego, could be even more exciting as he chases a hat-trick of big half-marathon wins in 2010. Aged just 19, he has been tipped to run close to 61 minutes and he has already won the Reading and Bristol Half-marathons and was runner-up to Gordon Mugi Maguhu - who will also run here next month - in last week’s Robin Hood Half-marathon in Nottingham.

Zac Kihara won the Redcar Half-marathon but there are also several useful British athletes hoping to make an impression, including former European cross-country bronze medallist Andrew Pearson.

Toby Lambert has run 64.29, Tipton Harrier Ian Williams has been close to 66 minutes and leading the locals could be March ace Glen Watts, the former English Under 23 steeplechase champion.

His twin brother Dan, the former Evening Telegraph Sportsman of the Year, has also entered.

The women’s field features Helen Jemutai, who expects to break 71 minutes, Robin Hood winner Sarah Jeriwoo Kiptoo and Genet Measso who took the Cardiff 10k.
