In 2013 the group announced their first Patron, Dan Gordon, Visually Impaired former Paralympic Cyclist. Dan is working to support the Ability PLUS Group to promote sport and physical activity for people with disabilities and additional needs in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough and in doing so raise the profile of disability sport locally.
Dan had a sports career spanning 15 years and represented Great Britain in three sports. As a cyclist he was with the British Cycling national squad from 2003 to 2005, during this time he was a world record-holder at 1km time trial, indoors and out, European champion and competed at the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games. He has vast experience of supporting athletes and coaches in a variety of sports, including track and field, swimming, cycling, and team sports. Dan is now Programme Leader for Sport and Exercise Sciences and principle lecturer in Exercise Physiology at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge.
As Patron Dan is available to attend events and interviews around the county to promote the Ability PLUS Group and the benefits of sport and physical activity can have for people with disabilities. The Ability PLUS group will also be using Dan’s knowledge and experience to support projects to be delivered for the benefit of people with disabilities. Dan has already been able to support the Action for Children Inclusion training event recently with sports clubs and leisure providers. Dan gave a personal insight into having a sensory impairment along with promoting the need for more inclusive opportunities for people with impairments to progress in sport and fulfil their potential.
On being appointed Dan commented “I am truly honoured to be appointed as the Patron of the Ability Plus group. The group do tremendous work in promoting sport and physical activity for people with a disability. I hope that we can continue to build on these foundations and maximise the impact from London 2012”
