What is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and what does it mean for you and your organisation?
There are many definitions CSR, however I like to think of it simply as: A business commitment to behave ethically, responsibly and to contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce, their families and the local community at large.
CSR can have many positive promotional and financial effects, it’s no wonder more of the top companies in the world are introducing CSR programmes.

What has CSR to do with employee wellbeing?
The core of many CSR policies is the drive to improve the quality of life of the workforce, their families and the local community at large. This takes the holistic approach to employee health focusing on them and their environment.
Employee wellbeing programmes that include looking after employees in and out of work have often result in improvements of attendance, productivity, employer satisfaction and loyalty. All of which have positive effects on business expenditure. Healthy People = Healthy profits, which also happens to be the Business in the Community (BiTC) slogan for raising awareness about employee health.

Having fun with your work colleagues can help improve how you work with them, which can also improve how good you feel at work. The Department of Health Responsibility Deal and Physical Activity Pledges for the workplace - 29/06/2011
What we eat, how much we drink and how active we are is heavily shaped by our environment. Creating the right environment can encourage and empower people to take responsibility for their health and make healthy choices.
Launched on 15 March 2011, the Public Health Responsibility Deal has been established to tap into the potential for businesses and other organisations to improve public health and tackle health inequalities through their influence over food, alcohol, physical activity and health in the workplace.
Organisations signing up to the Responsibility Deal commit themselves to take action on a voluntary basis. These actions are expressed as a series of collective pledges covering health at work, physical activity, food and alcohol.
Workplace Pledge:
Physical activity in the workplace – We will increase physical activity in the workplace, for example through modifying the environment, promoting workplace champions and removing barriers to physical activity during the working day.
Over 180 organisations have already registered as Responsibility Deal Partners, each signed up to at least one collective pledge.
Tesco, FIA and the Premier League have also made ‘Individual’ pledges towards Physical Activity.
The ‘Individual’ pledges:‘Are specific to a particular organisation or sub-group within a sector, and have been developed by them and approved by the relevant network chairs and the Department of Health. Making an individual pledge gives an organisation the opportunity to demonstrate where they can be leaders in their sector by going further than collective action can at present, or to make a commitment in an area where collective action is not appropriate.’
