Once in a Lifetime

Introduction

The aim of Once in a Lifetime is to utilise people’s interest in sports and the arts and raise the skill levels and aspirations of individuals living within targeted communities in Cambridgeshire.

It has been awarded the London 2012 Inspire Mark that recognises oustanding non-commercial projects and events inspired by the Olympic Games.

Sports and arts have often motivated people to engage in activity where other areas have failed. They offer enjoyable, non threatening and accessible opportunities to participate and improve. Often utilising transferable skills, there are numerous examples where the lives of people have been changed by involvement in arts or sports.

Qualification Criteria

The project will focus on individuals over the age of 16, currently residing in targeted areas including: Eynesbury, St Neots, March, Ramsey, Chatteris, North Huntingdon & Oxmoor, Waterlees and Wisbech. All residents in these areas who are economically inactive and/ or those without qualifications or low skilled (less than 5 GCSE’s at A-C level) will be eligible.

Once in a Lifetime is funded until March 2010.

All Training is FREE for participants

Two Stage Process (Training & Development)

1.    CP Learning Trust will facilitate a number of first step taster sessions in the arts and sports to engage and encourage further learning. Some individuals may attend more than one workshop, to develop their interest and build their confidence. These workshops will help identify those who are ready to progress to the full programme of learning.

2.    Delivery of a number of full programmes, whereby participants will build their confidence and gain a qualification to assist with their progression into further education, volunteering or employment.

The following list gives examples of the types of courses available in this project from August 2009.

  • Event Stewarding
  • Sports Coaching
  • Multi Skills Sports & Arts
  • Music Technician
  • Confidence Building

Each full programme course will last up to 30 hours. Every participant will receive a recognised qualification and/ or gain confidence, and will be offered the opportunity to engage with information, advice and guidance services.

CP Learning Trust working with Local Authority Sports and Arts Development Officers will identify service providers and partners who will support participants with advice, guidance and signposting to suitable training, employment opportunities or voluntary work. This will assist participants to make the next step into volunteering, gaining a qualification or going into paid work.
