Sportivate is a national programme to increase the opportunity for young people to be active across the country. The programme is designed to target young people who are the most at risk of physical inactivity. The health risks associated with physical inactivity are huge and can have serious consequences if they are not addressed. Living Sport has enabled clubs, charities and youth organisations to tackle inactivity across Cambridgeshire with physical activity interventions for young people.

Sportivate has been a great tool for organisations to reach young people. Over 1100 inactive participants came through the programme in 2015/2016, proving the great work of local deliverers to support the cause. Recent research from the British Heart Foundation has shown that 20 million people in the UK are physically inactive. This will have alarming consequences including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, increased risk of stroke and reduced life expectancy. Failing to address these issues already costs the NHS £1.2 billion per year.

Living sport has invested £50,000 to dedicated interventions that puts the health of young people first. Although inactivity levels in Cambridgeshire are below the national average, pockets of the county and specific groups of people are regularly inactive. Investment into targeted areas, disability groups and female focused projects has enabled specific projects targeting specific young people to be funded.

All the projects funded in Cambridgeshire have been designed to help young people reach the recommended guidelines for physical activity. Children should be active for at least 60 minutes per day, and adults at least 150 minutes of the day. The Sportivate programme looks to impact the behaviour young people have towards being physically active, so the health benefits can be felt past the funded intervention.

Through the Sportivate programme Living Sport has been able to work with a range of organisations who are directly impacting on young peoples lives. If you are part of an organisation that has regular access young people aged 11 – 25 and do not currently access physical activity, please contact us and we can help.
