Time to Listen is a 3hr 30 min workshop for Club Welfare Officers (CWO). 

Please ensure that your National Governing Body accepts the multi-sport version of this Time to Listen course before booking. 

The workshop will:

  • Describe how a club welfare officer works with others to create a child centered environment
  • Explain how the club welfare officer role fits into the wider safeguarding environment
  • Apply learning to case studies including sharing good safeguarding practice

The course is interactive with group activities and discussions and helps Club Welfare Officers to understand their role and be most effective.  It gives the opportunity to share experiences and reflect on how to make Safeguarding in the Club ‘live’. 

Who is the workshop for?

Club Welfare Officers - a Safeguarding & Protecting Children in Sport workshop must previously been attended.

Learner eligibility

Learners must be a minimum of least 18 years of age and be able to communicate effectively in English.

Assessment (if applicable)

Informal ongoing assessment will take place throughout the workshop. A certificate will be sent out after completion of all 3 modules.  It is recommended that refresher webinars are completed every 1-2 years.

Format / duration

This workshop is delivered virtually over 3.30 hours over 2 consecutive weeks. Both weeks need to be attended in order to obtain the certificate.  Modules will be delivered as follows:

Module 1 - 16th June 2021 - 6.00pm - 7.15pm

• Introductions – to the course, the technology (where relevant), each other, the subject (including safeguarding considerations.)
• Quiz to test pre-course information
• The role of the club welfare officer (this role can vary between sports, so sport specific delivery can address this more explicitly)

Mid-course homework - to be completed as soon as possible after the Module 1
• Review of NGB policy and procedures
• Scenarios are sent out for discussion in the final module

Module 2 & 3 - 23rd June 2021 - 6.00pm - 8.15pm (includes 15 minute break between modules)

Module 2 – Safer clubs (60 mins)
• Safer club checklists
• Safeguarding culture
• Listening to children
• Involving children and parents

Module 3 – Applying procedures (60 mins)
• Going through procedures
• Scenario based discussions
• Summing up next steps

This is an Online course completed by Zoom.  Learners must have access to a laptop or tablet and be familiar with how to use Zoom. A tablet or smartphone device is accepted but functionality can be limited and is not recommended. The device must have access to a camera and microphone as the sessions will be interactive. Please also ensure you have the ability to connect directly into your router (wifi access may drop out). If you have any additional learning needs, please let us know upon registration.  Please note that you will be required to join the session ten minutes before the course commences to ensure there are no technical issues.  No refunds will be issued for non attendance/technical issues as it is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct equipment to access this online course.
