Deaf Awareness Week, running from 3rd to 9th May, aims to promote the positive aspects of deafness, promote social inclusion and raise awareness of the huge range of local organisations that support deaf people and their family and friends.

At the height of the pandemic in 2020, Living Sport were able to support Peterborough and District Deaf Children's Society (PDDCS) through our Tackling Inequalities funding provided by Sport England and the National Lottery to create a virtual summer camp to support families when they needed it most.

PDDCS is a charity run by parents dedicated to providing support, information and advice for parents and families of deaf or hard of hearing children and young people in and around the Peterborough area. They would normally run a week’s summer camp in August for isolated deaf children to get together, based around sport and other activities. With the prospect of not being able to run their usual programme due to coronavirus restrictions they had to come up with other solutions to enable the young people and their families to still feel connected and supported. They turned to Zoom and successfully ran three days of activities including sports and cooking alongside a British Sign Language sign along session each day.

The virtual camp was a great success and enjoyed by many families.

Fantastic feedback was received, with one parent commenting:

“Well done for pulling it all together and ensuring we had a platform that worked and making it such fun for the kids. They had a blast, the mix of activities worked really well. Your time and effort has been really appreciated and the kids are lucky to have you.”
