Forever Active Forum Ltd became a registered Charity in 2014 providing a range of classes suitable to older adults. The Charity provide classes for 800+ members across Cambridge City, East Cambs, South Cambs and Fenland.

Due to Covid-19, Forever Active were forced to close 70+ classes in late March and since then have been working hard to communicate with its members and provide online classes/links to relevant sessions. Unfortunately 25% of their members do not have access to technology and emails and Forever Active have been unable to communicate with them as regularly as they would have liked. Communications normally happen via the instructors at the weekly classes. These members are amongst some of the most vulnerable during Covid-19 lockdown as they are unable to connect via social media and see friends and family via online systems such as ‘Zoom’ and chat groups such as ‘WhatsApp’

Forever Active in partnership with Living Sport through a Community Small Grant have been able to provide their vulnerable members with a free resistance band and exercise book to enable them to exercise safely. All Forever Active members who regularly attend strength and balance classes are familiar with the exercises in the book.

The evidence of not exercising and building muscle when you are over the age of 50 has been collected by Public Health. Forever Active  members who do not have access to the internet have to rely on TV exercise programmes which have been highlighted as not suitable (especially for the very frail). Providing a resistant band to do exercises will help to maintain muscle strength and the exercises will be familiar to their members that are missing out on their regular weekly sessions

Jane Jones Forever Active Development Officer said ‘This grant has been extremely valuable, just the small amount of money but has enabled us to do something proactive for our members that do not have access to technology. This keeps us connected to all our members and support their health and well-being in this difficult period. We hope to be back at venue classes as soon as we are given the green light, but recognise this may be while yet for a lot of our members’
